Isolation Hug
This project is an inquiry into rethinking and rebuilding our physical and virtual boundaries, memory tactility, and memory preservation. How does the private enter the public domain?
In early 2020 a new term – social distancing – entered our life. Proxemic zones – the intimate, the personal, the social, the public – became our daily topic of conversation. First, we all saw people imitating hugs from a distance by stretching their arms in the air. Next, we saw DIY hugging devices and “socially-distanced-hug” mems. And later, in the years 2020 and 2021, we all read reports on the mental health impact due to the deprivation of tactile contact with family and friends.
Whether it is narrow or wide, a person big or small, weak or strong – how can one measure the hug or quantify the energy it gives? The feelings of the giver and those of the receiver?
For the project, I ask for mathematical measurements of the hug, thus registering a matter of fact and the memory of the moment.
